The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) defines Nature Based Solutions (SbN) as "actions to protect, manage and restore sustainable natural or modified ecosystems" having the potential to meet "the social challenges of effectively and adaptively, while simultaneously providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits" (Cohen-Shacham et al. 2019, p. 21). The European Commission defines SbN as actions "inspired and supported by nature, which are profitable, that simultaneously provide environmental, social and economic benefits and help build resilience” (EC, 2016). They are, therefore, solutions that contribute to social and biodiversity challenges in a synergistic way. Applicable in urban, rural and natural situations, the SbN actions consider the complexity of relations and possibilities of exchanges, by the specificities and interpenetration between these three landscape cutouts. Although the concept of SbN is the target of international debates for its clarification, which also occurs in the academic environment. Several actions in different spheres have sought to defend the potential of using SbN in mitigating the effects caused by the climate change on local and global scales. As an ongoing discussion, it implies strengthening its bases , both institutional and legal, in the intensification of the theoretical discussions, the development of parameters, the application of qualitative and quantitative metrics, the evaluation indicators and the exchange of experiences, in collaboration networks, to increase the concepts and realize the guidance of good inspiring practices of public policy, governance, financing, maintenance and monitoring, in a way to promote the articulation between groups of different actors. In this sense, the special issue of this proposal is to invite articles about Natured-based Solutions: principles and experiences in urban, rural and natural territories to guide parameters to urbanism and public policies.
